Week 7: Classification (Dewey Decimal Classification)

27/3/2013

Part A: Theoretical

From today lesson I able to know what is classification.  As we know that, cataloging can be divided into 3 main areas: a) Classification    b) Description   and    c) Subject.  Today lesson, we are going to learn the last subtopic of cataloging then in the future classes we are going to learn database.

What is library classification ?
From our general knowledge, classification means that we are going to classify or group them together.  Library classification is grouping items on the shelves according to broad fields of knowledge and specific subjects within each field, so that users can find items easily.

The Aims of Library Classification:
1) put in order the field of knowledge in systematic way
2) bring related items together
3) provide orderly access to the selves (browsing or via catalog)
4) provide exact location for an item on the shelves.

Major Classification Scheme:
1) DDC -- Dewey Decimal Classification
2) LCC -- Library of Congress Classification
3) UDC -- Universal Decimal Classification
4) CC --  Colon Classification
5) BC -- Bliss Classification

Today lesson, we are more focus on DDC & LCC  !!!
So what is DDC about ?  What about LCC ? Mr Abdul Razak Bin Idris had given us another assignment which is write a simple and precise essay about Why school practice DDC and why university practice LCC in the cataloging of resources.

What is DDC ??

"A library assigns a DDC  number that unambiguously locates a particular volume to within a short length of shelving which makes it easy to find any particular book and return it to its proper place on the library shelves. The system is used in 200,000 libraries in at least 135 countries".

DDC 22 is composed of the following major parts in four volumes:

Volume 1
(A) New Features in Edition 22: A brief explanation of the

specialfeatures and changes in DDC 22
(B) Introduction: A description of the DDC and how to use it
(C) Glossary: Short definitions of terms used in the DDC
(D) Index to the Introduction and Glossary
(E) Manual: A guide to the use of the DDC that is made up
primarily of extended discussions of problem areas in the
application of the DDC. Information in the Manual is
arranged by the numbers in the tables and schedules.
(F) Tables: Six numbered tables of notation that can be added to
class numbers to provide greater specificity
(G) Lists that compare Editions 21 and 22: Relocations and
    Discontinuations;Reused Numbers

Volume 2
(H) DDC Summaries: the top three levels of the DDC
(I) Schedules: The organization of knowledge from 000 - 599

Volume 3
(J) Schedules: The organization of knowledge from 600 - 999

The Ten Main classes of DDC :
Volume 4
(K) Relative Index: An alphabetical list of subjects with the disciplines in which they are treated sub-arranged alphabetically under each entry

LLC (Library Of Congress Classification

LLC is the one the most widely used classification systems.  The system divides all knowledge into twenty-one basic classes, each identified by a single letter of the alphabet.  Whole numbers used in LCC may range from one to four digits in length, and may be further extended by the use of decimal numbers.

In a nutshell, I summarized what had I understood about the cataloging.  Subject cataloging is helping users to briefly describe what is the content in the book, descriptive cataloging is helping the librarian to do the arrangement of the book in the shelves based on physically. Then, classification is able for easily locate the books based on the fields.

At the end of the lesson, En Abdul Razak Bin Idris remind us that after come back from semester break we are going to learn database.

Part B: Hands-on on DDC

As a beginner, I need to practice on doing DDC because I had nothing expose to the DDC before.  Therefore, I try to ask my friends on how to do DDC.  There are a few steps to do DDC, I had summarize as below:

Step 1: Use the Volume 4 (Index) to find the list of suitable subject
Step 2: Use Volume 2 or 3 and finally
Step 3: Use Volume 1 for Tables; the six numbered tables of notation that can be added to class numbers to provide greater specificity

This is how it is written :

Line 1:      453:001 [DDC call number according to its subject]

Line 2:       MUH        [The first 3 letters of the main entry]

Week 6 : Subject Cataloging

20/3/2013 (Wednesday)
Part A : Theoritical
Today we had learned about the subject cataloging.  As we know that, cataloging consists of (a) descriptive cataloging,  (b) Subject Cataloging  and    (c)  Classification.  Subject cataloging is the part of cataloging of materials resources.  Or we called it "subject headings".  The headings which is best represent the subjects of the work in words and / or phrases using an authoritative list.

The purpose of subject cataloging is to provide access by subject to all relevant materials. Besides, subject cataloging also helping subject access  materials through all suitable of subject organisation.  Therefore, subject cataloging need to control the vocab.

For the subject analysis, there are several steps need to be control:
              1) Examine the work in hand
              2) Decideon several keywords that could represent the subject
              3) using keywords as a starting point, go to each term in the list to identify appropriate
                  headings.

Other than that, I also learn few short words that helping in subject cataloging:
           1) BT  =  broader term
           2) NT = narrower term
           3) UF = use for
           4) RT = related term
           5) SA = see also

Part B: Hands-on Subject catalogings
Then, our class continue with our "self practise" in the resources room  at Faculty Education.  We try to find back what we did in the cataloging and try to add in the subject cataloging.  Here is my outcome:

Here is what I did from week 4 and week 5.

Part 2
As we know that catalog is a list of library materials contained in a collections that make our life easier to find document, what a library has and assist us in the choice of document. From today lesson, we have learned that:

How to Catalog for Serials & Non Book Material ?

The way to catalog for  serials and non book material is same as cataloging for book material. The main entry for non book cataloging is the title and description about the material such as non book material is colourful or not, what is the software able to be used, sound, duration of time and etc.

Meanwhile, the common types of serials publications such as periodicals, annual reports and recurring reports of activities, directories, yearbooks, and other similar reference works, newsletters, statistical publications, newspapers and legal and official publications.

After Mr Abd. Razak Idris had given the knowledge and explanation about cataloging for non book material.   Then, we have to go to library / resource center in our faculty to do our "hands on" activities.

Format :
a) Serials:
Title. Vol. 1, no.1 ( years first published) - place of publication:
        Publisher, Year of publication -
        Physical description (extent of item)
        Serial number
        1. subject          I. Added entry

b) Non book materials:

Week 3 (reflection) Descriptive Cataloging

27/2/2013

Today's lesson is hard for me to understand because I am still new is this courses. The words 'descriptive cataloging' still very weird to me.  But, I try my best to understand the lesson taught by Sir Abdul Razak and also by searching the information online.  So this is my understanding about 'descriptive cataloging".

As we know that catalog is a list of library materials contained in a collections that make our life easier to find document, what a library has and assist us in the choice of document.

Therefore, cataloging is really important for producing catalog that able to consumer for easy retrieving the materials.  Bibliographic Cataloging is the process of building of a database using specific rules for transcribing and recording essential information, assigning classification numbers and subject headings. There are 3 main areas in catalog record:
       1) Classification              2) Description                      3) Subject

The rules need to follow in cataloging are:
1)  ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description)  or
2)  AACR2 ( Anglo- American Cataloging Rules)

ISBD areas of description:
1) Title & statement of responsibility
2) Edition
3) Material (or type of publication) specificdetails
4) Publication, distribution etc.
5) Physical distribution
6) Series
7) Note
8) Standard number and terms of availability

There are 3 levels of description based on the purpose of the catalog or catalogs for which the entry is constructed. First level, second level or third level.  The school libraries are using the first level.  Most libraries in Malaysia agreed to use the second level.  For our lesson, we are more concentrate on 2nd level of description. Today, we only introduce to the concepts and next week we are going to practice to do the "hands on" cataloging.

Second level  of description is:
Title proper [General material designation] = parallel title : other title information / first statement of responsibility ; each subsequent statement of responsibility. - Edition statement / statement of responsibility relating to the edition. - Materials (or type of publication) specific details. - First place of publication, etc: first publisher, etc, date of publication, etc. - Extent of item; other physical details; dimensions. - (Title proper of series / statement of responsibility relating to series, ISSN of series ; numbering within the series. Title of subseries, ISSN of subseries; numbering within subseries. - Note(s). - ISBN : price (qualification)
