Week 3 (reflection) Descriptive Cataloging

27/2/2013

Today's lesson is hard for me to understand because I am still new is this courses. The words 'descriptive cataloging' still very weird to me.  But, I try my best to understand the lesson taught by Sir Abdul Razak and also by searching the information online.  So this is my understanding about 'descriptive cataloging".

As we know that catalog is a list of library materials contained in a collections that make our life easier to find document, what a library has and assist us in the choice of document.

Therefore, cataloging is really important for producing catalog that able to consumer for easy retrieving the materials.  Bibliographic Cataloging is the process of building of a database using specific rules for transcribing and recording essential information, assigning classification numbers and subject headings. There are 3 main areas in catalog record:
       1) Classification              2) Description                      3) Subject

The rules need to follow in cataloging are:
1)  ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description)  or
2)  AACR2 ( Anglo- American Cataloging Rules)

ISBD areas of description:
1) Title & statement of responsibility
2) Edition
3) Material (or type of publication) specificdetails
4) Publication, distribution etc.
5) Physical distribution
6) Series
7) Note
8) Standard number and terms of availability

There are 3 levels of description based on the purpose of the catalog or catalogs for which the entry is constructed. First level, second level or third level.  The school libraries are using the first level.  Most libraries in Malaysia agreed to use the second level.  For our lesson, we are more concentrate on 2nd level of description. Today, we only introduce to the concepts and next week we are going to practice to do the "hands on" cataloging.

Second level  of description is:
Title proper [General material designation] = parallel title : other title information / first statement of responsibility ; each subsequent statement of responsibility. - Edition statement / statement of responsibility relating to the edition. - Materials (or type of publication) specific details. - First place of publication, etc: first publisher, etc, date of publication, etc. - Extent of item; other physical details; dimensions. - (Title proper of series / statement of responsibility relating to series, ISSN of series ; numbering within the series. Title of subseries, ISSN of subseries; numbering within subseries. - Note(s). - ISBN : price (qualification)
